The Challenge

Michael has run Connor Opticians on Castle Street in Belfast city centre since 1992. Like a lot of owner-practitioners, he was stretched thin, splitting his time between the clinic and running the business, with too little left for the business itself.

He knew where he needed help: the accounts, his operating procedures, staff training, and getting his message across to his team. What he was missing was the time and the structure to actually move on any of it.

“Before David, things were taking literally years to get done.”

The Approach

Michael chose David because he’d known him for years and knew he worked across many different sectors, and felt he was the right person to help. They now meet once a fortnight.

Each session, David helps him plan the weeks ahead and develop the strategies for the business, then holds him accountable to them, so the plans actually happen rather than drifting.

“He holds me accountable to my goals, and helps me plan for what needs done in the weeks ahead.”

In the last three or four months since we’ve been meeting, I’ve done more and made more big decisions than I would have in the decade before.

The Outcome

The change has been in momentum. With a clear plan and someone keeping him accountable, Michael has made more significant decisions for the business in a few months than he had in the previous ten years, and he’s clear about where he’s headed next.

As he puts it, none of us know what the future holds, but his goals are set, and he plans to keep working with David to achieve them and get the business set up exactly the way he wants it.
